چکیده
Materials and methods Children were recruited from outpatient clinics within Tygerberg Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Caregiver report of middle ear infections was obtained through a questionnaire. Bilateral otoscopy, tympanometry, then pure-tone testing was completed. Hearing loss was defined as a pure-tone average (PTA) of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz of >15 decibels of hearing level (dB HL) in the poorer ear. Unilateral hearing loss was defined as one normal ear and one ear with hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss was defined as an air-bone gap of ≥15 dB at a minimum of two frequencies in either ear. The percentage of children with hearing loss and mean PTA were compared between HIV+ and HIVchildren. The effect of WHO status on hearing loss was examined for HIV+ children.

متن کاملSurvival of HIV-1 and HIV-2 perinatally infected children in The Gambia.
BACKGROUND The risk of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV-2 is much lower than that of HIV-1, but the long-term prognosis of perinatally infected HIV-2 children is unknown. We re-visited children who were part of a large MTCT study in The Gambia (conducted during 1993-1997), in order to compare the long-term survival of children perinatally infected with HIV-2 with that of seronegative ...
متن کاملNeurodevelopment in perinatally HIV-infected children: a concern for adolescence
Globally, an estimated 3.4 million children are living with HIV, yet little is known about the effects of HIV and antiretroviral treatment (ART) on the developing brain, and the neurodevelopmental and behavioural outcomes of perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV+) adolescents. We reviewed the literature on neurodevelopmental outcomes in PHIV+ children and adolescents, and summarized the current eviden...
متن کاملLanguage impairment in children perinatally infected with HIV compared to children who were HIV-exposed and uninfected.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the risk for language impairment (LI) in children perinatally infected or exposed to HIV. METHODS We evaluated the prevalence of LI in 7- to 16-year-old children with perinatal HIV infection (HIV+) compared with HIV-exposed and uninfected children, using a comprehensive standardized language test (Clinical Evaluation of Language Functioning-Fourth Edition [CELF-4]). L...
متن کاملThe physical and psychological effects of HIV infection and its treatment on perinatally HIV-infected children.
INTRODUCTION As highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) transforms human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) into a manageable chronic disease, new challenges are emerging in treating children born with HIV, including a number of risks to their physical and psychological health due to HIV infection and its lifelong treatment. METHODS We conducted a literature review to evaluate the evidence on ...
